Harry started to knock on Kara’s door and then stopped. He wasn’t expecting sex. He wasn’t opposed to it, but he’d meant what he said when he told her that he planned to do things right. Even so, he had to question if going to her room after the kisses they’d shared was a good idea. She had him tied up in knots. They were the best kind of knots but knots all the same. His mind was spinning at the possibility that everything he wanted was at his fingertips. But he wasn’t foolish enough to believe that things could be so simple. Being with Kara was easy. Things felt right. But he’d thought things had been right with his ex-wife, too. Just because things were going smoothly now didn’t mean they always would. Kara wasn’t the only one who had fears and reservations.

He had his hand up, still debating if he should visit with her this evening, when her door opened and she jolted with surprise to find him standing there, prepared to knock.

“Shit,” she breathed.

A chuckle bubbled up in him, but he swallowed it down. “Sorry.”

“I can tell by that smirk on your face.”

Harry closed the door behind him as he came in. Instead of taking his usual seat against the window ledge, he stretched on the bed, putting his head on a pillow. He’d fallen asleep like that the night before and wouldn’t mind doing it again, but she had other ideas. She grabbed a photo album and leaned against her headboard. He put his arm around her legs as she opened it. He grinned at a photo of a tiny bundle wrapped in Phil’s arms. Kara flipped through the pages, taking time to tell him the story of each day captured in the glossy prints.

This was part of their time together that he cherished. Not just being with Kara but hearing about the life he had missed. She and Phil may have had their issues with his childhood, but they hadn’t been as bad as Phil had said or he wouldn’t have integrated Kara so deeply into his life with Jessica. From the start Kara was there, taking photos, painting rooms, making clothes and blankets. Offering Jessica the same tokens of love she had given to Phil.

“His wife left when Jess was about six months old,” Kara said, drawing Harry back to the conversation. “When they were told Jess had to have surgery on her heart. I can’t imagine leaving my baby, especially when she was so sick.”

“I’d guess that is why she left,” Harry said. “She couldn’t handle the stress of it.”

“She didn’t want her.” Kara traced her fingers over Jessica’s image. “She wanted to abort her. Phil wouldn’t allow it.”

“Thank God, huh?”

Kara nodded. “This little girl brought us back together. Phil and me. I don’t think he ever would have invited me to be an integral part of his life if she hadn’t come along.”

“I don’t believe that.”

She cast him a sideways glace, and Harry massaged her thigh reassuringly.
